J.B. Cornwell Ahoy, Rex.

I agree with Xenos. The Garmin GPSMAP 76 and 176 are their hottest selling models and excellent values. Probably the best value out there.

I currently use a Garmin GPS12 MAP on one boat and as a backup. It is portable, but discontinued.

On my other boat I have a Garmin GPSMAP 162. It can use Garmin's Mapsource CDs to load super high resolution lake maps from Fishing Hotspots or, for salt water, the famous Garmin Bluecharts. Mapsource and Bluecharts are what make the Garmin units kings of the water.

The least expensive ($100 or so) handheld units will keep you from getting lost and you can find your way back to anywhere. If you spend $500 or so you get good maps to help.

I like my GPSMAP 162. Go to Garmin's website and you can get all the specs and MSRP. Expect BPS, West, etc. to offer them at 60% to 80% of MSRP.

SeaDawg Ditto on the GPS 75 and GPSMAP 76. My wife sell them, and these Garmins are by far the most popular.

Most guys go for the GPSMAP76, and get the BLUECHART CD with it, since Garmin now has a $50 rebate on it. The screen is big enough to show all the detail too.

Once it is installed, you can even see the bottom topo lines, along with wrecks and other neat stuff.

Be careful with the other brands, because even though they advertise they will float, most are not waterproof like the Garmins.

Go to http://www.garmin.com, and you can check out all the units there.
