Buying Used Electric Troll Motor Price Question?

FISH'N101 I found a used Motor Guide, Bill Dance Signature Series trolling motor for sale. It is a 40lb thrust 12v with a foot control. By the appearance of it I would say it has never been used. Which is what the seller says. He has a receipt from Wal-mart showing cost at $395.00. It is a 1997 model. He is asking $225.00. Any Ideas of value. Is this a good motor in general. Is it still repairable? Any help would be appreciated. 2002-06-18
J.B. Cornwell Hi, Fishn.

That's too much for a 5 year old motor. It's a good one, but not that good.

I have a 2000 Minn Kota Auto Pilot40, list $540, that I bought from Cabelas in 2000. I want to upgrade to a Genesis AP55 with the built in sonar transducer.

I will sell it for $300. [Smile]

FISH'N101 I think you are right. The price seems a little high because of the age. The thing that's interesting about this motor is the fact that it has never been used. It has no signs of any use. The price tag is still on it. It was purchased and never used.
What kind of a price do you think it should sell for.

J.B. Cornwell Ahoy, Fishn.

I overlooked the "never been used" part of your first post.

I think anything up to $200 would be fair.

Good luck. [Smile]

FISH'N101 I think 200.00 is pretty close JB. I have a 14' Sylvan aluminum fishing boat. This 40lb thrust should be plenty of power.
Thanks for responding.

What do you think of the Minn Kota foot controller that is not mechanical. I forget what they call it, but it must be an electrical system of some sort. It comes with a long cord that would allow me to be more in the middle of my boat than in the front.

Cast-Away I have heard more go things about Minn Kota than Motorguide. Motorguide has a lot of problems with their foot controllers. I asked the question at a rod and electric motor repair shop last year. They told me that they service far fewer Minn Kota's than Motorguide's. They are an authorized repair for both models. By the way my Minn Kota is fantastic! [Cool] 2002-06-20
FISH'N101 Cast-away, I was leaning toward Minn Kota myself for a new model. The stuff I have read and most people who have owned various brands seem to prefer Minn Kota most of the time. I also talked to an authorized repair shop that echoed what you were told. This Motor Guide just came along and sounded like a pretty good option if I could get it for $150.00 to $200.00.
But a new motor with a warranty also sounds tempting. Again this Motor Guide has never been used. But No Warranty.....

ebbtide176 JB, I'm interested in getting a powerdrive unit. it seems the 'online users' option is not in effect anymore, so I really don't know how to get to you. have you sold your autopilot tm? 2002-06-20
sandy Used trolling motors are cheap. I just bought a new Motorguide 67 lb. thrust and going to
sell the old one. It's a 1992 Motorguide 41 lb. thrust, runs great, just not enough
power to push a heavy bass boat around. Has foot
pedal, 12/24, and needs cleaned up a little. For
$75.00 I'm told it's a deal. Anyhow, if you or
someone else is interested, E-Mail: [edited]

crab bait just my 2 cents.. I'd stay away from anything Motorguide ever made... I'd jump all over JB's .. it mite a have some miles on it.. but can bet your last biscuit it's been well cared for.. Motorguide is just problematic rattling inefficient piece of.... well, I own one.. fool me once....shame on...well, never again..... 2002-06-23
